Description: Their albums may be ordinary but when Placebo hit the stage in front of thousands of screaming fans they become a completely different band. Brian Molko’s one in a million vocal style stands out by a mile. Just as impressive is the bands amazing chemistry on stage and musicianship as they rip through a hit-laden setlist. One of my favourites!

Description: The band exploded onto the rock scene after their massively successful first album. The bands mix of pop punk and altiernative rock with a hint of electronic was a surprise hit on both mainstream and alternative music scenes. This short snappy set by the band fronted by the very charismatic Shirley Manson was held outdoors just proving the popularity of the band.

Venue: Big Day Out, Sydney

Setlist:
For Whom The Bell Tolls
Frantic
Sad But True
Fade To Black
Battery
Nothing Else Matters
Master Of Puppets

Description: St Anger may have been Metallica’s most poorly received album to date but this show in support of that album suggests quite the opposite. In front of a capacity crowd of 55 000 in Sydney the band played a highly energetic hard rocking set. Although this recording includes only a handful of songs, they are my 7 favourite Metallica songs.

Description: The band was in Australia as a part of the inaguaral Big Day Out festival in support of their modern masterpiece Nevermind. To the surprise of many this was the band’s second visit down under after their initial visit in 1988 when they did a pub and club tour. On this tour the venues remained moderately intimate (at least for their festival side shows) with most of the gigs being held in theatres. This would have to be the most significant gig on this site and among the most impressive, Cobain is brilliant on vocals and Grohl shows signs of what was to come from him on the drums. If you were to download only one gig from this site this is the one I recommend you get.

On the back end of the set he is joined by Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder doing a song of the band’s Vs album. This show was put on especially by Triple J on the back of Harper’s Burn To Shine album which he recorded with the Innocent Criminals.

What I Don't Know 'bout You
Heavy Heart

The Cream And The Crock
Fifteen

Trike
Fox On The Run
Mr Milk
Hippy Hippy Shake
Chinese Rock

Description: One of Australia’s most respected alternative rock bands through the 90s, fronted by the very gifted songwriter Tim Rogers. The band enjoyed heavy airplay on Triple J with their hit single Heavy Heart from the 1998 album #4 Record. Sadly the band’s popularity has gradually declined over the last decade, so this show is You Am I at the peak of their commercial success. I’m uncertain whether this was recorded in Sydney or Melbourne.

Description: Recorded two years before the release of their first breakthrough album this is The Oils in their formative years as they built a loyal fan base in the ever-growing Australian Pub Rock scene. The venue of this show was the very much the heartland of pub rock in the early 80s so the band very quickly earned a reputation of lively performances. There aren’t too many hits on this recording but one to listen out for it Don’t Wanna Be The One which was a single of the bands second album (from 1980) Place Without a Postcard. Frontman Peter Garrett is now a Minister in Federal Parliament in Australia, he shows hints of his political activist side during this performance.

AC/DC, Chemical Brothers, Ramones

AC/DC

Date: 1977
Venue: Haymarket, Sydney

Setlist
Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap
She's Got Balls
Problem Child
Live Wire
Jailbreak
The Jack
Can I Sit Next To You Girl
High Voltage
Rocker
It's A Long Way To The Top

Description: The band headlined the Haymarket Festival. Despite being a Sydney-sider myself I know little or nothing about this festival but was held nearby to where the Sydney Entertainment Centre currently stands. By 1977 AC/DC was the biggest band in Australia and had moderate international success. In my opinion this is AC/DC at their live-on-stage best with Bon Scott up front. The band went onto become the highest selling Australian band of all time and one of the highest anywhere in the world with the success of Back In Black recorded after the death of frontman Bon Scott.

This show signified the beginning of a very big year for the Brothers as they went to play the massive main stage of Glastonbury Festival and supporting U2.

11. what a wonderful world (Louis Armstrong)

Description: Let me begin by saying that this is an incredible recording. Triple J’s music director describes this performance as one of the best the station has had to chance to record. In front of a crowd of 20 000 the multi-Grammy award winning Brit act put on one hell of a show. This is Coldplay at their very best, a level they failed to re-capture during their 2005/6 tour for X&Y. Controversy surrounded the bands performance as the day before Chris Martin has been taken into custody for punching out a paparazzi, nonetheless the police let Martin go without charges or hassle. The 11 tracks featured on this recording are brilliant only topped by Martin’s on stage charisma and grace. Since the band has become a global phenomenon and it seems that they are unlikely to repeat the raw and passionate performances heard on this recording.

Description: One of the most exciting bands to come out of the 90s built around the song writing brilliance of former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl. This tour was on the back of the bands best album The Colour and the Shape driven by hits like Monkey Wrench and Everlong. The band plays with incredible energy in a rather intimate venue, a far cry from the arena’s the band headlines nowadays. Alongside Foo Fighters were apart of small grunge- revival scene which fell away quickly but the Fooeys fight on.

Venue: Big Day Out, Melbourne

Setlist

The Mercy Seat
Deanna
The Ship Song

Plain Gold Ring

He has been awarded basically every accolade available in Australia and deserves some international recognition for his work. This is one of the many bands Cave has assembled, they formed in 1984 and are still making brilliant Australian rock music (although most of the band is non- Australian). This was in support of their 6th studio album Henry’s Dream.
